Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving has showed interest in representing Australia in the next Olympic Games in the year 2028. Known for his clinical skills, Irving has been facing imposing regulation, resistance and red tape before he could officially represent Australia in basketball at international level.
During the NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco, Kyrie Irving confirmed that he has started paperworks for taking Australian citizenship and representing his birth country in basketball. “We’re in the process of that right now, just trying to figure out what’s going to be the best route for me to be eligible,” Irving was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
If I play for Australia, it would be great: Kyrie Irving
Kyrie Irving was born in Melbourne in 1992, when his father Drederick was an import for the Bulleen Bullets in the South East Australian Basketball League. However, his family was shifted to the United States before he turned two. He was picked in NBA’s first draft in 2011 and has also represented US at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“Just trying to figure out what’s going to be the best route for me to be eligible. You know, there’s a lot of paperwork in between that. Obviously, Team USA still has a decision to make, but I’m just trying to do what’s best for me. Honestly, if I can be an Aussie at one point in my career, and play for the Australian team, that would be great,” Irving said.
Kyrie Irving will be 36 years at the time of the Olympic Games in 2028. In his presence the Australian team will become more strong for the next edition with players like Dyson Daniels, Josh Giddey, Josh Green, and Johnny Furphy.
