On October 2, Monday, the Indian roller skater Aarathy Kasturi Raj teamed up with Karthika Jagadeeswaran, Heeral Sadhu, and Sanjana Bathula, to win the bronze medal in the women’s speed skating 3000m relay at the Asian Games 2023. The 29-year-old, who took up the sport of roller skating at the age of five, is married to the Indian cricketer Sandeep Warrier, who felt extremely proud of his wife following her historic success at the Asiad.

Aarathy Kasturi Raj, who is also a doctor by profession, participated in the second Asian Games, securing the first medal for India in the speed skating discipline. Notably, the Chennai-born athlete is now pursuing a PG in clinical embryology, to expand her portfolio in the non-sporting side of things.

In the women’s speed skating 3000m relay, the Indian team clocked a time of 4:34:861 to secure the bronze medal for the country. The gold medal in the event went to Chinese Taipei with a time of 4:19:447 time, while South Korea earned a silver medal after registering a time of 4:21:146.

Sandeep Warrier talked to PTI in the immediate aftermath of his wife Aarathy Kasturi Raj winning the bronze medal for India. He was quoted as saying, “I'm extremely proud of her. I'm really happy that she finally made it. I've seen her struggle in the last six-seven years but she has not given up and kept at it.”

The 32-year-old also spoke about the work done behind the scenes by his wife, which led to her memorable performance at the Asian Games 2023. He said, “I know the effort she has put in the last couple of years. I've seen it in front of my own eyes, how she was dedicated and kept the whole focus was on this medal. I don't remember when she last took a break in two-three years.”
