The 19-year-old cricketer H arjas Singh caught the attention of all cricket fans when he smashed a brilliant half-century for Australia in the U-19 World Cup final against India to help them lift the U-19 WC title for the fourth time. Singh scored 55 runs off 64 balls and helped them to post a challenging total of 253/7 on board.
Harjas Singh, before the final game, managed to score only 49 runs from six innings. But when it mattered the most, he shocked the world by scoring a fifty in the final match at Benoni against India.
Harjas Singh was born on January 31, 2005, in Sydney, Australia to parents of Indian origin. His family had moved from Chandigarh to Sydney in 2000. Harjas started playing cricket at the tender age of eight, featuring as a substitute player at the local Revesby Workers Cricket Club in New South Wales.
Harjas is a student of Westfield Sports High School, Fairfield. He has sporting genes running throughout him. His father, Inderjit Singh, was a Punjab state boxing champion, while his mother Avinder Kaur was a long jumper.
Harjas in an interview with Indian Express has said that "I still have family back in Chandigarh and Amritsar. We have a house in Sector 44-D, but the last time I was there was 2015. Thereafter, cricket took over and I never got the opportunity. My uncle still lives there". He also said that "his parents sacrificed all their free time to ensure that he got proper training as they worked in the transport industry, where they spent a lot of hours for the savings to help him shape in cricket career".
Harjas Singh in his Youth ODI career has recorded 297 runs from 14 innings at an average of 22.84 and also he has scored 260 runs from 8 innings in his Youth Test career at an average of 32.5 which also includes a century against England U19 side in Northampton, 2023.
