On Thursday, October 17, world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland took to her official Instagram account to announce that Wim Fissette from Belgium will be her new coach after parting ways with Polish Tomasz Wiktorowski earlier this month. During his coaching career, Wim Fissette has worked with Grand Slam winners Kim Clijsters, Angelique Kerber, and Naomi Osaka, and his association with Iga Swiatek could propel the Pole to more top accolades in her professional tennis career.
Notably, Wim Fissette split up with Naomi Osaka in September of this year after coaching her to two of the four Grand Slam titles, to take up the similar role with Iga Swiatek. Before him, the Polish tennis superstar worked with Tomasz Wiktorowski for the last three years, keeping her supremacy at the French Open, apart from winning the US Open, but she is yet to reach the final of the Wimbledon or the Australian Open.
I’m excited and motivated to start a new chapter: Iga Swiatek on Wim Fissette becoming her new coach
In a short video on her official Instagram account, Iga Swiatek announced the appointment of Wim Fissette as her new coach. She also wrote in her post, “So, I have news for you today as I’m excited and motivated to start a new chapter. I’m happy to announce that Wim Fissette is joining our team. As you know, I’m preparing for the WTA Finals but my perspective is, as always, long-term, not short-term.”
Iga Swiatek also spoke about the experience of Wim Fissette in coaching some of the top tennis players during his career. “I said many times that my career is a marathon for me, not a sprint and I’m working, operating and making decisions with this approach. I want to say that I’m very excited and looking forward to working with Wim. He seems to have a great attitude, vision and huge experience at a very top level of tennis. It’s always crucial to try and get to know each other better but we’re off to a good start and I can’t wait to compete soon,” she added.
