The Blue Tigers are set to face their fierce neighbours Pakistan in the opening game of the 2023 SAFF Championships on Wednesday, June 21 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. India are coming off an Intercontinental Cup title win, while Pakistan lost all three games in the four-nation series involving Kenya, Djibouti, and Mauritius.
India are the most successful team at the SAFF Championships with eight titles which is six more than the next successful side, Maldives. The Blue Tigers are on the rise as they once again entered the top 100 in the FIFA rankings after their Intercontinental Cup heroics. Igor Stimac’s side are coming off a 2-0 win over Lebanon in the Intercontinental Cup 2023 final with goals from captain Sunil Chettri and Lallianzuala Chhangte.
On the other hand, Pakistan are returning to the tournament after missing the 2021 edition due to a FIFA suspension, which was lifted last year. Pakistan football team are currently ranked at 195 by FIFA and are coming off a 3-1 loss against Djibouti. The Green Shirts are also having a goal-scoring drought as they have scored just one goal in their last three games. Pakistan are yet to win a game in 2023 and will hope for a miracle at the SAFF Championships 2023 as they are the second-lowest ranked side in the competition. In SAFF Championships, their best finish came in 1997 when they finished third.
