The Sri Lankan cricket board, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Sunday announced the postponement of the third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) with immediate effect. The board announced the news with a statement on their website which revealed that it has been done at the request of the tournament’s rights holders. Notably, LPL 2022 was scheduled to be held between 1 and 21 August.

The cricket governing body in the Island Nation said that the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG), the Rights Holder of the tournament had submitted a request to postpone the tournament citing the worsening economic situation in the country. The board, however, did not say anything about when the T20 league can be conducted.

“Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to announce that the Lanka Premier League 2022, which was scheduled to be held from 1st to 21st August, 2022 will be postponed, with immediate effect. This decision was taken by the SLC, following a request made by the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG), the Rights Holder of the tournament, which cited the current ‘economic situation,’ in the country, as not conducive to hosting the tournament,” SLC said in a statement.

It's worth mentioning that the Sri Lankan cricket board had announced the third edition of the LPL just a few days ago. Everything from dates and venues was finalized for Sri Lanka's own T20 league. LPL 2022 was all set to kick off on August 1 with a match between Jaffna Kings and Galle Gladiators. A total of 24 matches were scheduled to be played in this edition of the league.

21st August was scheduled to be the Finals Day with the summit clash to be played at the Mahindra Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium. The MRICS was set to host the second leg of the tournament including the knockouts. Meanwhile, R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium was set to host the first leg of LPL 2022.
