Over its illustrious history, the IPL auction is all about the teams signing young rising sensations to big-money contracts. Gerald Coetzee, the South African fast bowler, who impressed one and all during the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023, could be in line to land a major deal in the franchise T20 league for the upcoming season.
Although Gerald Coetzee has not played in the IPL till now, he was signed by Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for Liam Livingstone in May 2021, just before the pandemic forced the officials to postpone the tournament by a few months. But, when the IPL resumed in September 2021, Livingstone made his return to RR, leaving Coetzee without a team.
Fast forward to 2023, Gerald Coetzee has made the world take notice of him, with some quality performances during the CWC 2023. In the eight matches, he picked up 20 wickets at an average of 19.80 and an economy of 6.23, playing a crucial role in South Africa reaching the semi-final of the competition.
With that being said, SportsTiger looks at three IPL teams who could look to sign Gerald Coetzee to a contract in the franchise T20 league during the upcoming 2024 auction.
Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians have released the likes of Jofra Archer, Jhye Richardson, Duan Jansen, and Riley Meredith before the IPL 2024 auction, leaving spots open to bring in new fast bowlers to their squad. As a result, it is highly likely that MI could spend some of their ₹17.75 crore purse on signing Gerald Coetzee, who has the capability to shine on pitches at the Wankhede Stadium providing good pace and bounce to the fast bowlers.
