Indian women’s cricket team has outperformed its opponents at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games and hence is competing with Australia for the Gold medal. Having defeated England in the semifinal, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side is taking on Australia in what is the first-ever gold medal match.
Kaur lost the toss but the decision to bowl first has not hurt the Women in Blue. In fact, it has augured well for India as they are looking to restrict Australia under a below-par target and the players are doing everything in their capacity to make it possible. Deepti Sharma, who is a brilliant athlete and is often lauded for her three-dimensional prowess, put in a brilliant effort in the deep to send back dangerous Beth Mooney.
On the second ball of the 18th over of the Australian innings, Sharma grabbed a one-handed stunner while fielding at mid-on. Sneh Rana darted a delivery outside the off-stump which Mooney tried to deposit into the stands. However, she could only bottom-edge it and the ball ballooned up. Sharma who was standing at mid-on ran backward and kept her eyes glued to the ball.
When Sharma felt that she won’t be able to reach it with her both hands, she stretched her right hand and cleanly held on to the ball. She did not lose control even when her back hit the ground.
