The mega 10-team Indian Premier League 2022 is set to commence on March 26 this year. There were reports earlier that the broadcasters want the tournament to kick off on Saturday instead of Sunday (March 27) to get the ball rolling right from the beginning.
As it turns out, the matter was discussed during the IPL Governing Council (GC) meeting held on Thursday (February 24) evening and the final decision was taken to start IPL 2022 from March 26 onwards.
"The IPL will kick off on March 26, the full schedule will come soon. We will also have crowds but as per the policy of the Maharashtra government. Whether it will be 25 or 50 per cent of the stadium capacity will be decided by the government instruction," IPL chairman Brijesh Patel told Cricbuzz.
Venue for play-offs not yet decided
With the tournament set to take place in a new format, all the 10 teams are slated to play 14 matches each during the league stages. As a result, there will be quite a few double headers and IPL 2022 is likely to conclude on May 29, Sunday.
Although the league stages are likely to take place in Maharashtra, as earlier reported, BCCI have not yet decided the venue for play-offs with Ahmedabad as one of the other options for them. Meanwhile, it has also been revealed that next edition of Women's T20 Challenger will also be conducted this year.
