When it seemed that everything was getting back on track at the global level, a new threat has surfaced. After battling an unknown enemy in the form of Coronavirus, the world is now seeing two countries fighting against each other. The ongoing battle between Russia and Ukraine is an ominous sign for the whole world. People across the globe are worried and have only one question in their minds, is it leading the World to a New War? Is World War 3 is on the cards?

This fear of people has resulted in WWIII trending on Twitter. But there is also a section of Twitter users who are trying to keep things light with timely memes and funny content. A user from the same section tried to placate the rest by saying that there is not going to be a World War as IPL (Indian Premier League) is around the corner. "Guys koi world war nahi horahi, agle mahine IPL hai and they can’t reschedule it. so chill (Guys, there is not going to be a World War. IPL is due next month, and they can't reschedule it. So Chill!)," wrote the user.

Why are Russia and Ukraine standing against each other?

The main reason for conflict between the two countries is Ukraine's interest in getting NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) membership. Russia, who are already a part of the group, doesn't want Ukraine to be included while other members seem to be okay with the inclusion. Also, as Russia and Ukraine share a geographical border, the former doesn't want any external support for Ukraine in case of any eternal attack.

As per the principle of collective defence, NATO considers an attack against one or several of its members as an attack against all. This is the principle of collective defence, which is enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. This is why Russia opposes NATO membership to Ukraine. It thinks that if Ukraine becomes a member of NATO, it might try to take back Crimea by military action.
