The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering a hike in fees for Test cricketers to add to the significance of the longest format. The latest development has come to light after players have decided to save themselves for the Indian Premier League (IPL) after abandoning red-ball cricket.
As per the report from the Indian Express, the BCCI has decided to redraft the salary structure of the national team players after the wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan and others ignored their directive to play domestic cricket recently. The 22-year-old opted to prepare for the IPL next month after he had taken a break due to mental fatigue during India’s tour to South Africa in December.
A source within the BCCI spoke about the new remuneration model and said, “For example, if someone plays all Test series in a calendar year, he should be rewarded additionally, apart from the annual retainer contract. This is to ensure that players turn out for more red-ball cricket. This would be an additional perk for playing Test cricket.”
The new remuneration model from the BCCI for the Indian players is expected to be implemented after the upcoming season of the IPL. In the meantime, the BCCI are also working on an additional bonus for the players who manage to play in all Test series in a season.
Notably, the match fees per Test for Indian players is ₹15 lakh, while for the ODIs and T20Is are ₹6 lakh and ₹3 lakh, respectively.
