After India’s humiliating defeat in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, head coach Gautam Gambhir has been on a target by the fans and experts. Now, the further reports suggest that BCCI can replace him after the Champions Trophy in 2025 if the team doesn’t perform well. Notably, Rohit Sharma led team India are having a poor outing in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under as Australia are in a lead with 2-1 with one game to go.
As per the reports by Sports Tak, BCCI will replace Gautam Gambhir as Indian head coach if the team fails to win the 5th Test and continue their poor show in the 2025 Champions Trophy. The fifth and final BGT is set to take place at Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7. On the other hand, the Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place in Pakistan and Dubai starting on February 19.
Gambhir was never BCCI's first choice: Board official claims
An official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India has revealed that Gautam Gambhiris likely to get replaced as a head coach if the performance doesn’t improve. Apart from that, the official also claimed that Gambhir was never the first choice of the board to get selected as a head coach. He was appointed as the overseas coaches didn’t wish to coach India in all three formats.
“There is a Test match to be played and then there is Champions Trophy. If the performance doesn't improve, even Gautam Gambhir's position wouldn't be safe," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity,” the BCCI official was quoted as saying by Sports Tak.
"He was never BCCI's first choice (it was VVS Laxman) and some of the well-known overseas names didn't want to coach all three formats, so he was a compromise. Obviously, some other compulsions were also there," the official said.
