Nicholas Kirton, the captain of Canada cricket team, was arrested and detained at the airport in Bridgetown, Barbados, for potential drugs charges on Sunday, March 30. After learning about Nicholas Kirton’s fate in the Caribbean, Cricket Canada sent out a statement earlier on Friday, April 4, stating that they are “actively monitoring” the situation, while speaking about how the matter is taken quite “seriously” by them.
Notably, Nicholas Kirton was born in Barbados, but he plays international cricket for Canada because of his eligibility through his mother, as per the report from BBC Sport. In the early stages of his cricket career, the left-handed batter had represented the U-19 team of West Indies before making his way to Canada, to pursue professional career, and he managed to debut for them in international cricket in a T20 match in the year 2019.

The official statement from Cricket Canada about their men’s team captain Nicholas Kirton’s arrest and detention in Barbados read, “We are actively monitoring the situation and closely following developments as they unfold. We take this matter seriously and remain steadfast in upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability within the sport.”
During his international career for Canada, Nicholas Kirton has played 28 T20I and 21 ODI matches, while getting appointed as the captain in July 2024 after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. With the arrest and detention of the 26-year-old, he might not be a part of Canada squad for the inaugural edition of the North American Cup, a five-team tournament which is set to begin in the Cayman Islands on April 18.
