The Indian top-order batter Shubman Gill got severe criticism from the fans on social media platform X for failing with the bat in both innings during the first Test of the five-match series against England. At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, India fell to a 28-run loss against England after dominating the Test match early on.
After Cheteshwar Pujara’s exclusion from the Indian cricket team following the WTC loss in the summer of 2023, Shubman Gill was given the No. 3 spot in the batting order. Since then, he has struggled to get big scores in the Test format, putting together just 177 runs in his last 10 innings at an average of 17.77 without a half-century.

During the first Test against England, Shubman Gill threw his wicket away in the first innings after scoring 23 off 66, trying to hit out the debutant Tom Hartley across the line, but only managing to find Ben Duckett at the mid-wicket region. In the second innings for India, he defended the second ball after walking out in the middle against Tom Hartley, but Ollie Pope took a smart catch at silly point to send him packing without troubling the scorers.
Following Shubman’s Gill second ball duck on Day 4, India found themselves in a bit of strife at 42/2 while chasing a 231-run target. It led to criticism pouring in for the right-handed batter from all sides, and the fans were not pleased with his lack of scores in Tests in the past few months.
