Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is set to miss yet another Grand Slam, this time the US Open. Kyrgios has withdrawn from the tournament following persistent injury issues and will be focusing on recovery following knee surgery earlier this year. The player has only competed once in this year and was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon, and ATP tournaments in Washington, Cincinnati and Toronto.
The US Open, on Friday announced that Kyrgios has withdrawn from the tournament and wished the enigmatic player a swift recovery. This will be the fourth Grand Slam in a row that Kyrgios will miss. The 28-year-old Australian will miss the US Open due to a wrist injury concern, while he missed other tournaments because of knee and foot issues. Due to persistently missing tournaments, Kyrgios’s world ranking has fallen to no 92. This comes only a year after he reached the Wimbledon finals.
The US Open announced, “Nick Kyrgios, a 2022 quarterfinalist, is out of this year's US Open. Hope to see you back on the court soon, Nick!”
Additionally, Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, and Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta and Diego Schwartzmann have also withdrawn from the US Open.
Kyrgios sparks controversy after commenting on women’s pay in tennis
The Australian player always manages to find his way into the headlines. He recently commented on the pay gap between women and men in tennis after the subject was in the news again following the revelation that British player Dan Evans would earn more money than American Coco Gauff despite both winning the Washington tournament.
Kyrgios replied that Vondrousova, who won Wimbledon this year, made more than Novak Djokovic. He was criticized for his comments because he compared a woman who won the tournament to a runner-up.
He said, “What about slams? Do we do this breakdown then? Vondrousova made more than Novak that week.”
