Indian legend Jhulan Goswami, who put women’s cricket on the map in her home nation and worldwide, was born on November 25, 1982 in the state of West Bengal. During her illustrious career at the international level, which lasted more than 20 years, Jhulan Goswami became a two-time finalist in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup in the year 2005 and 2017. She is the highest wicket-taker (355) in women’s international cricket in all formats combined, including 44 wickets in 12 Tests, world record 255 wickets in 204 ODIs, and 56 wickets in 68 T20Is.

The journey of Jhulan Goswami at the highest level of the game began way back in January 2002 as a teenager when she made her ODI debut for India against England in Chennai, picking up figures of 2/15 in seven overs, to help the team win by eight wickets. Just a couple of weeks later, she got the opportunity to compete in a Test match for India versus England in Lucknow, which ended in a draw after the first innings of both the teams weren’t completed across four days.

In 2006, Jhulan Goswami became the youngest player to 10 wickets in a Test match at 23 years and 277 days old against England at Taunton. She is one of the only two Indian players alongside Deepti Sharma to score more than 1000 runs and pick in excess of 100 wickets in the ODI format. The 41-year-old also has the second longest international career in the ODIs (20 years and 261 days) and T20Is (19 years and 262 days).

The final match of Jhulan Goswami’s international career came against England at the Lord’s in London in September of 2022 as India won a close ODI fixture by 16 runs and clinched the three-match series 3-0. Since then, she has been a part of the coaching and commentary scene in cricket, and earlier this month, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) announced that they will be naming a stand in the ‘B’ Block of the Eden Gardens in Kolkata to honour her name.
