Indian badminton ace, PV Sindhu edged past Busanan Ongbamrungphan to book her Malaysia Masters 2024 final spot on May 25, Saturday. Sindhu qualified for her first final of the year as she beat her Thai opponent with a scoreline of 13-21, 21-16, 21-12. The two-time Olympic medalist took two hours and 28 minutes to take down her opponent, world-ranked 20. With the win, world ranked 15 extended her tally against Busanan to 18-1.
Sindhu would aim to win her first tournament since the Singapore Open in 2022, as she plays against China’s world-ranked 7 Wang Zhi Yi. She came on the back of a victory against Zhang Yiman 21-9, 21-11 in the other semi-final. In her semifinal, Sindhu prevailed over Chinese top seed Han Yue in a 55-minute-long battle with a scoreline of 21-13, 14-21, 21-12.
Before this, the former world champion pulled off a remarkable victory against Republic of Korea’s Sim Yu Jin. Speaking of her final opponent, Sindhu had lost to Wang at the Arctic Open last year and defeated her twice in their three meetings. The semifinal clash turned out to be a physical battle for both the contenders, owing to their high-quality long rallies. Despite her on-point executions, smashes, and blocks, Sindhu fought till the end and registered a well-deserved win.
After securing her semifinal spot, Sindhu said, “It’s nice. I’ve got a good training block as well. Mentally and physically I’m 100 percent. Now it’s time to get that confidence back. I’m getting there but there’s still a lot more inside. I need to get all of that out.”
