With the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 almost reaching its half-way mark, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots have been handed a massive blow with Sherfane Rutherford withdrawing from the tournament. The West Indies batter’s decision to pull out of the tournament comes as a big blow for the side, who are struggling at the bottom of the points table.
Notably, the announcement which came from the CPL, was conveyed midway through St Kitts and Nevis Patriots’ last home game against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, which was played at the Warner Park in Basseterre on Sunday, September 8.
Sherfane Rutherford pulls out of CPL 2024; replacement to be announced soon
The decision on Rutherford’s withdrawal was announced on Sunday, following which the CPL organisers also added that his replacement will be announced soon. Notably, Rutherford’s decision to pull out of the tournament comes, citing personal reasons, he has so far featured in only four games for the franchise, scoring 35 runs at a strike rate of 194.44.
“Sherfane Rutherford is leaving St Kitts and Nevis Patriots squad due to personal reasons and will take no further part in the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL),” the statement from CPL read. They also added that “a replacement for Rutherford will be announced in due course.”
Notably, in Rutherford’s absence in the match against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots included Dominic Drakes in the line-up.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to take on Saint Lucia Kings next
The Andre Fletcher-led St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, who lost their fifth straight game in the CPL 2024, are currently placed at the bottom of the points table with a solitary win, which came in the tournament opener against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound.
After their two-wicket defeat against on Sunday, skipper Andre Fletcher said, “I must say thanks, but we disappointed them (the St Kitts and Nevis crowd).” “It’s hard and would like to apologise as the leader as well, saying sorry for not giving them a win on home soil. But all is not lost, we still have four more games left. We still have to go out there play the cricket and play hard and we will try to win the next four,” he added.
The St Kitts and Nevis Patriots will next take on Saint Lucia Kings at the Daren Sammy National cricket Stadium in Gros Islet on September 13.
