SportsTiger understands that Indian middle-order batter and Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer may not be considered for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. The showpiece T20 event will kick-start on June 2 a week after the IPL 2024 final. The Men in Blue have been waiting to end their 11-year ICC trophy doubt and are set to take drastic measures to get themselves the best chance to win.
Ahead of the Indian Premier League, Shreyas Iyer was in troubled waters with the BCCI as he was dropped from the central contracts for side-stepping First-class cricket. However, Iyer played for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy ahead of the five-match Test series against England, from which he was dropped after the second game, and then in the knockout stage where his side clinched the title.
Shreyas Iyer is set to be out of T20 World Cup 2024 squad
After the conclusion of the Indian first-class season, Iyer joined the KKR and hasn't had an incredible season so far for the Purple and Gold. In six matches for Kolkata, Iyer has scored 140 runs at a strike rate of 122.81 with a highest score of 39. Based on his recent performances in T20Is for India, Iyer will not be part of the scheme of things for the upcoming World Cup.
It’s a funny game at the end of the day: Iyer on defeat against RR
Shreyas Iyer and the Kolkata Knight Riders were on the receiving end of a Jos Buttler masterclass as he powered Rajasthan Royals to chase down 224 at Eden Gardens. Reacting to this defeat, Iyer said, "Emotions were a roller coaster, certainly didn’t think we will get into this situation. It’s a funny game at the end of the day, he was striking the ball cleanly and timing them so well, have to take it on the chin and move on."
"I mean at this point of time you see that you bowl your best deliveries, a little bit hit or miss and you are sent out of the ground, it’s good that it happened now rather than it happening in the later stages of the tournament, good learning for us."
