On Sunday, November 5, the Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli completed the record-equalling 49th ODI hundred against South Africa in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. But when the 35-year-old was nearing the epic milestone, he had slowed down a bit, which led to A a kash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer, sending out a post on X, through which he seemingly took a dig at him  by saying that “The obsession is unreal.”

At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the pitch for the ODI World Cup 2023 match between India and South Africa wasn’t easy to bat by any stretch of the imagination. Although the first 10 overs of the Indian batting innings saw them put 91/1 on the board, it was due to the combination of the impressive attacking play from Rohit Sharma (40 off 24) and the wayward bowling from the opposition bowlers.

From that point onwards, during the second powerplay stage from 11-40 overs, Team India scored just 148 runs for the loss of two wickets. It was Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer digging deep in their batting innings to accumulate the majority of the runs, with occasional boundaries here and there.

During the third powerplay stage from 41-50 overs, as Virat Kohli moved closer to the three figure mark, he was focused on giving the strike to the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, who were scoring boundaries for fun. Ultimately, in the 49th over of the innings, Virat Kohli reached his 49th ODI hundred to equal the longstanding record of Sachin Tendulkar, staying not out on 101 in 121 with just 10 fours, while ensuring that India reached 326/5 in their allotted 50 overs.
