CM Punk, one of the most polarising figures in the world of pro-wrestling, has made a shocking return to WWE at the Survivor Series PLE in his hometown of Chicago to close out the show. The moment the iconic song “Cult of Personality” from Living Colour was heard at the sold-out Allstate Arena, the fans went wild for their hero CM Punk, who showed his face for the first time on WWE television in nearly a decade.

The main event of WWE Survivor Series, a men’s WarGames match, saw the team of Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, the World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, and the returning Randy Orton get the better of Judgement Day’s Finn Balor, the Money in the Bank contract holder Damien Priest, Dominik Mysterio, JD McDonagh, and their partner Drew McIntyre. Cody Rhodes scored the pinfall on Damien Priest with a Cross Rhodes to secure the big victory for his team in a gruelling back-and-forth contest inside the two rings surrounded by a steel cage.

WWE’s Chief Creative Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque, talked about the surprise return of CM Punk in the post-show press conference at the Allstate Arena. He was quoted as saying, “This was one of those lightning-in-a-bottle moments that came together very quickly but we are incredibly excited about it. It’s been a long time, and in some ways been a long time coming.”

“You could say this about CM Punk; love him, hate him, positive, negative, whatever you want to say, people talk about him all the time. He’s a magnet for that. He’s a conversation starter and it’s tough to look past that. For me, if our fans want it, if the WWE Universe is excited to have it, then let’s go. And we’ll figure out the rest of it from there,” he added.

In other major matches on the Survivor Series card, the women’s WarGames match had the team of Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Bianca Belair, and Shotzi defeat Damage CTRL’s Bayley, Asuka, Kairi Sane, and the WWE Women’s Champion Iyo Sky. The Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley defended her title successfully against Zoey Stark, while Gunther retained his Intercontinental Championship against The Miz.
