India took on New Zealand in the first ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday in Hyderabad. The Men in Blue started well after opting to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill once again stitched a half-century partnership for the first wicket. However, New Zealand bounced back as they picked three wickets in quick succession. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ishan Kisan departed one after the other.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill continued his merry run in ODI cricket and scored a half-century off 52 balls. The batter capitalized on the start and scored his third ODI century off just 87 balls. While Gill led the charge with the bat for India, he found good allies in Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. However, both the batters departed after scoring handy runs.

While Yadav handed a catch to the cover fielder, Pandya was given bowled out by the third umpire in a rather controversial decision. The Indian vice-captain was adjudged out by the third umpire despite replays showing otherwise. In the 40th over of India's innings, Daryl Mitchell bowled a good-length delivery. Pandya tried to slice it but missed it.

Meanwhile, the bails fell off and New Zealand started appealing. The on-field umpires referred the decision to the third umpire who took enough time to make a wrong decision in the end. The replays clearly showed that the bails feel off due to Tom Latham’s gloves and not due to the ball clipping them.

Fans on Twitter also did not look impressed with the decision as they called out the third umpire for erring despite clear evidence.
