Inter Miami honoured Argentine football great Lionel Messi after he became the only football player in history to win his 45th career trophy following a win at Copa America 2024. Messi, now the most decorated player, came off injured in Argentina’s 1-0 win against Colombia in the final. The ceremony took place ahead of Miami’s MLS clash against Chicago Fire on Sunday, July 21 (IST).
Messi won his third major international tournament with the side but got injured in the final and was benched near the 66th minute of the summit clash. However, a late winner by Lautaro Martinez in extra time helped the side lift their record-breaking 16th title in the tournament. Messi attended Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and as seen wearing a protective boot due to his ankle ligament injury.
The tribute ceremony by Inter Miami had 45 child mascots each holding a plaque card depicting each trophy won by the 2022 FIFA World Cup winning captain.
