Czech tennis player and World No. 43 ranked Karolina Muchova despite a neck-and-neck fight in the French Open final on Saturday, June 10 failed to clinch her maiden Grand Slam title.
After dropping the opening set 2-6 against the World No. 1, she fought back in style to claim the second set 7-5. With the sets levelled and game going into the final set, Muchova just missed by a margin as Iga Swiatek claimed the game 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Soon after the results, the Czechia could not control her emotions as she broke down in tears during her runners-up speech.
The 26-year-old player, who had her maiden Grand Slam title in sight, was later confronted by 18-time Grand Slam champion Chris Evert, who was present for the award ceremony at the Women’s Singles final.
Karolina, however congratulated her opponent and four-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek on her win. She also credited her team, family and friends for backing her throughout the tournament. “To my team, to my box - this is the hardest one. You know, when I look at these people, I actually feel like I’m the winner. So, thank you,” she said.
While thanking her coaches and family and friends, Muchova also added, “I hope this is only the beginning for us. We’ve come a long way. We’re gonna keep getting stronger and come back.”
