American tennis player Taylor Townsend yelled at her mixed doubles opponent during a rally at the US Open 2023 on Sunday, September 3. The incident happened when Taylor, along with Ben Shelton, took on Joe Salisbury and Luisa Stefani. Townsend’s yelling was targeted towards her opponent Salisbury while the rivals were engaged in a rally during the game.
Though yelling during a tennis match is considered offensive and the player can get a serious warning due to the same, the 27-year-old was not punished for her actions in the first round of the event. The bizarre incident took place during the second set, amidst a rally.
The American hit the ball towards the opponent’s court, and while the ball was still in the air, Taylor yelled, “Hit me, hit me”, which was directed towards her opponents. However, the best efforts put in by Taylor and her partner Shelton went into complete vain, when Salisbury returned it with an explosive shot.
The match saw the American pair recording a sound win over their rivals, and with it, they moved to the next round. In the round of 16, the pair locked horns with India’s Rohan Bopanna and his mixed doubles partner Aldila Sutjiadi, and recorded a win over them too.
