South Africa are hosting India in a multi-format series, which started early in December with the T20I series. While the three-match T20I series ended in a 1-1 draw, the Men in Blue sealed the ODI series by 2-1 margin going into the two-match Test series. While the hosts won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first, taking crucial wickets to start things off in the opening Test.

However, after Indian top order departed with the scoreboard reading 24/3 in the 12th over, South Africa was also handed a major blow as their skipper Temba Bavuma limped off the field after pulling his hamstring. The incident took place in the 20th over of the first inning off Marco Jansen’s over.

On the fourth delivery of the 20th over, Kohli carved the ball through extra cover on the drive. Bavuma, who was stationed at the mid-off region, went down chasing the ball and in the meantime sustained the injury as he was seen limping while he neared the ball. The physio was quick to check on him and opted to walk off the field with a grim on his face.

With Temba Bavuma walking off the field, Dean Elgar took over the captaincy reins, in what is his last series in international cricket. The veteran South Africa batter announced retirement from international cricket ahead of the two-match Test series against India.

Speaking of the ongoing first Test, after 20 overs Team India’s scoreboard read 60/3 with Virat Kohli (19) and Shreyas Iyer (15) at the crease.
